About Dr. Rahel Ghebre
Dr. Rahel Ghebre is a gynecologic oncologist and faculty with IGCS sponsored gynecologic oncology fellowship in Ethiopia.
Starting in 2015, Dr. Ghebre joined the ongoing fellowship training initiated at Addis Ababa University, Ethiopia, under the leadership of Dr. Carolyn Johnston (University of Michigan, USA) and Dr. Dawit Desalegn (Addis Ababa University, Ethiopia). From 2016-2019, Dr. Ghebre served as the fellowship director and extended the program, adding St. Paul’s Millennium Medical College and initiated collaboration with IGCS and German Society of Gynaecologic Oncology (AGO).
In February 2020, under the leadership of Dr. Ghebre and the Ethiopian Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ESOG) the first regional IGCS fellowship surgical training was conducted in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The IGCS supported fellowship program in Ethiopia has graduated five gynecologic oncologists in 2017-2019 and has four active fellows in training.
Dr. Ghebre completed her medical school at the University of Michigan and master’s in public health from Johns Hopkins School of Public Health. Dr. Ghebre is a professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Division of Gynecologic Oncology at the University of Minnesota Medical Center, USA. She serves as chair for gynecology oncology special interest group under AORTIC (African Organisation for Research and Training in Cancer), as panel member of NCCN Harmonized Guideline committee for sub-Saharan Africa, ASCO resource stratified guideline and African Cancer Coalition, an initiative supported by the American Cancer Society.
