The Basics

Clinical trials (or research studies) are essential processes in discovering new ways to prevent, reduce the risk of, detect, diagnose, and treat disease. Clinical trials show what does and does not work in people and help determine if the treatment side effects are acceptable to patients when weighed against treatment benefits.

The US National Institutes of Health “Clinical Research Trials and You” provides information on clinical trials basics, including how the process works, stages, terminology, patient protections, and more.
