Hospital Central de Maputo in Mozambique

Cervical cancer is the leading cause of cancer and cancer-related deaths among women in Mozambique, where it represents 32% of new cancers diagnosed in women. These high rates are primarily due to a lack of access to screening programs, limited public education, and a limited number of health care providers trained to diagnose and treat pre-invasive cervical disease.

In 2014, by invitation from the First Lady of Mozambique, MD Anderson, in collaboration with three Sister Institutions in Brazil (Barretos Cancer Hospital, Albert Einstein Hospital and A.C. Camargo Cancer Center), began working with physicians in Mozambique and the Ministry of Health with the goal of establishing comprehensive training programs for cervical, breast, head & neck and hematology related cancers.

The IGCS Oncology Global Curriculum and Mentorship Program is being implemented at Hospital Central de Maputo in Mozambique in collaboration with gynecologic oncologists from MD Anderson and Barretos Cancer Hospital that have been part of the collaboration since its inception.
