Hospital Central de Maputo in Mozambique

Cervical cancer is the leading cause of cancer and cancer-related deaths among women in Mozambique, where it represents 32% of new cancers diagnosed in women. These high rates are primarily due to a lack of access to screening programs, limited public education, and a limited number of health care providers trained to diagnose and treat pre-invasive cervical disease.

In 2014, by invitation from the First Lady of Mozambique, MD Anderson, in collaboration with three Sister Institutions in Brazil (Barretos Cancer Hospital, Albert Einstein Hospital and A.C. Camargo Cancer Center), began working with physicians in Mozambique and the Ministry of Health with the goal of establishing comprehensive training programs for cervical, breast, head & neck and hematology related cancers.

The IGCS Oncology Global Curriculum and Mentorship Program is being implemented at Hospital Central de Maputo in Mozambique in collaboration with gynecologic oncologists from MD Anderson and Barretos Cancer Hospital that have been part of the collaboration since its inception.

Local Supervisors

Dr. Dércia Idite Changule

Dr. Changule is a Mozambican Gynacologist Oncologist, working at Maputo Central Hospital as assistant hospital Doctor and she is a faculty member of Gynacology and Obstetrics at Eduardo Mondlane University. She attends and treats patients with gynacologic cancers, those with pre-cancerous lesions in that, she performs different procedures from thermoablation to radical surgeries and she works with ministry of health of Mozambique in advocacy of prevention of gynacologic cancers.

She is involved in research activities related to the prevention management of cervical cancer.

Prof. Doutor Cesaltina Lorenzoni

Prof Lorenzoni is a pathologist, Head of the National Cancer Control Program at the Mozambican Ministry of Health (MOH) and Scientific and Teaching  Director at  Maputo Central (HCM)Hospital. She is Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Medicine of the Eduardo Mondlane University (UEM). Dr. Lorenzoni graduated from the Faculty of Medicine of UEM. She holds a Master's Degree in Public Health in Cancer Epidemiology through the UEM (MPH), a Master’s Degree in Policies, Health Program Planning, and a PhD in International Health from the University of Barcelona, ​​Spain.

She has published more than 80 articles in peer-reviewed journals, and has authored chapters in two books published by AFCRN, IARC,WHO and UICC.

Dr. Ricardina Rangeiro

Dr. Rangeiro graduated the fellowship in October 2020 and now serves as Local Supervisor. Dr Ricardina is from Maputo, the capital city of Mozambique. She attended Pontificia Universidade Católica de São Paulo in Brazil for medical school, followed by two years of working as general practitioner in the rural area of Zambezia (Gurué and Nicoadala). She did her residency in Ob/Gyn in Hospital Central de Maputo, where she was working when decided to undertake the Gyn Oncology fellowship.
Participating in this training program it was a unique opportunity to enhance knowledge and surgical skills, and to be around excellent mentors and learn from them to improve the treatment of Mozambican women with gynecologic cancer.

Certification recognized by the Brazilian Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FEBRASGO) in Gynecological Endoscopy and as a preceptor in Robotic Surgery. Gynecological Surgeon at the Oncology Center of Hospital Israelita Albert Einstein. Coordinator of the Robotic Surgery Program in Gynecology at HIAE. Coordinator of the Postgraduate Course in Robotic Surgery in Gynecology at HIAE. Coordinator of Clinical Research in Oncological Gynecology at HIAE and Vila Santa Catarina Municipal Hospital (HMVSC). Dr. Georgia Cintra is a gynecologic oncologist at the Brazilian Institute of Cancer Control (IBCC) in São Paulo and a professor at Institute of Teaching and Research of Sirio Libanês Hospital.
She had her medical degree and Obstetrics and Gynecology residency at State University of Campinas (UNICAMP). Fellowship in Gynecologic Oncology at Barretos Cancer Hospital where she later worked as an assistant for 3 years.

She has been involved in the Mozambique program since 2016.

Dr. André Lopes is a surgical oncologist specializing in the treatment of gynecological tumors. He completed his residency at the A.C. Camargo Cancer Center and pursued a fellowship in gynecologic oncology at the European Institute of Oncology in Milan, Italy. Currently, he works in the gynecologic oncology departments at the Instituto do Câncer do Estado de São Paulo/HCFMUSP and the A.C. Camargo Cancer Center in Brazil.

Dr. Renato Moretti Marques is a gynecologic oncologist at Hospital Israelita Albert Einstein (HIAE) in São Paulo, Brazil. Dr. Marques completed in residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology in 2003 and a Fellowship in Gynecology Oncology and Gynecological Surgery in 2004 from Federal University of São Paulo (EPM / UNIFESP). He currently teaches and participates in training programs in Gynecological Cancer and Minimally Invasive Gynecological Surgery (Laparoscopy and Robotic Surgery).

Dr. Mila Pontremoli Salcedo is a Professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Federal University of Health Sciences of Porto Alegre, Brazil (UFCSPA). She serves as the Chair and Director of Gynecology at Santa Casa Hospital in Porto Alegre, Brazil. Dr. Salcedo specializes in colposcopy and cervical pathology and is the Director of the Colposcopy Clinic at Santa Casa Hospital and the Managing Director of SOGIRGS (the Association of Gynecology and Obstetrics of Rio Grande do Sul State/Brazil).  She is currently spending one year as a Visiting Professor at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center where she will be performing research related to cervical and vulvar cancer prevention and treatment. Dr. Salcedo is the co-director of colposcopy and LEEP training courses in Mozambique and other low-resource settings.

Dr. Kathleen Schmeler is the Chair of the IGCS Education Committee. She is an Associate Professor in the Department of Gynecologic Oncology and Reproductive Medicine at University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. Dr. Schmeler is the Director of the MD Anderson and Lyndon B. Johnson Hospital colposcopy clinics where she treats women with pre-invasive cervical, vulvar and vaginal disease.

Dr. Marcelo Vieira is a national reference in gynecology and oncology surgery. Having performed the first uterine transplant between two living women in Brazil in 2019.
Doctor (PhD) and Master (MD) in Oncology. Author of more than 40 peer-reviewed articles and 5 chapters. He has performed several demonstrative surgeries around the world with more than 1000 surgeons as a live audience. He serves as a mentor and host to numerous international surgeons seeking to expand their knowledge and skills in laparoscopic and robotic minimally invasive surgery.
