University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital
Nigeria is Africa’s most populous country and most populous black nation globally, with an estimated population of more than 200 million people. About half of the people are females. Nigeria is made of 36 states. Prior to the IGCS supported training, there was no formal sub-specialty training program for Gynecological Oncology in Nigeria. As a result, the few trained Gynecological Oncologists practicing in Nigeria received their training overseas.
The University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital Enugu is the flagship tertiary hospital in southeast Nigeria. Built on 747 acres of land, the 700-bed capacity hospital serves the five southeastern states of Nigeria and some states from the south-south and north-central regions of Nigeria. The hospital has a multidisciplinary oncology center with functional diagnostic and treatment capabilities like CT scans and radiotherapy. In addition, the gynecological oncology unit of the hospital provides services in all areas of Gynecological Oncology.
The IGCS supported Gynecological oncology training at the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, which started in January 2022, is the first formal Gynecological oncology sub-specialty training in Nigeria. Contact with IGCS was initiated by the local supervisor, Prof Chibuike Chigbu, a former IGCS travel grant recipient, and facilitated by Prof Neville Hacker, a past IGCS president.

"My lifetime goal is to establish a formal gynecological oncology training program in Nigeria to help fill the enormous workforce gap in providing internationally acceptable standards of gynecological oncology care in the country. The IGCS global oncology curriculum and mentorship program provided the perfect platform to actualize this goal. I am grateful to IGCS, Prof Neville Hacker, and the Swansea Gynecological Oncology Center led by Prof Kerryn Lutchman-Singh for helping me to establish the first formal gynecological oncology sub-specialty training program in Nigeria."
