Dr. Ramirez is being honored with the IGCS Award for Outstanding Achievement in Gynecologic Oncology Surgery for his exemplary works as investigator, author, professor, and mentor culminating in a career that has unquestionably advanced the surgical standard of care for gynecologic malignancies.
Notably, he served as Principal Investigator on the LACC Trial, which changed the standard of care for cervical cancer comparing open to minimally invasive surgery for early cervical cancer. He has published extensively on surgical outcomes and innovations including sentinel lymph node biopsy and radical trachelectomy, as well as both laparoscopic and robotic surgery for gynecologic cancers. Author of the textbook titled Principles of Gynecologic Oncology Surgery, Dr. Ramirez is recognized internationally as an exceptional surgeon and educator sharing his knowledge, technical skills, and imparting wisdom to the countless fellows and junior faculty he’s mentored over the last two decades.
About Dr. Ramirez
Dr. Pedro T. Ramirez is a Professor in the Department of Gynecologic Oncology & Reproductive Medicine at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas, USA. He is the David M. Gershenson Distinguished Professor in Ovarian Cancer Research and Director of Minimally Invasive Surgical Research & Education. He is also the Director of the Gynecologic Oncology Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) Program. In addition, he is the Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Gynecological Cancer.
Dr. Ramirez is also the Principal Investigator of the LACC Trial, a prospective randomized trial evaluating the role of minimally invasive surgery in patients with early-stage cervical cancer undergoing radical hysterectomy. The manuscript for oncologic outcomes for this study has been published in the New England Journal of Medicine. In addition, he is a Co-Principal Investigator in the LANCE Trial, a prospective randomized trial comparing minimally invasive surgery to open surgery in patients undergoing interval cytoreductive surgery for advanced ovarian cancer.
Dr. Ramirez has also written a textbook titled Principles of Gynecologic Oncology Surgery. This textbook addresses strategies of preoperative evaluation of patients undergoing gynecologic surgery, techniques and details of such procedures, and prevention and management of postoperative complications. He has also published a total of 283 articles in peer-reviewed journals and 19 book chapters. He also serves as Reviewer for 31 peer-reviewed journals. As Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Gynecological Cancer, Dr. Ramirez and his team have elevated the profile of the journal to its most recent Impact Factor of 4.66, making one of the most important sources of academic research in the field of gynecologic oncology.
