The Gynecologic Oncology Global Curriculum and Mentorship Program is being implemented at two institutions in Ethiopia: Black Lion Hospital and St. Paul’s Hospital Millennium Medical College, both located in Addis Ababa. The hospitals are affiliated with Addis Ababa University’s School of Medicine, is the country’s largest general public hospital.
Tikur Anbessa Hospital (Black Lion) is the largest hospital in Ethiopia with multi –specialty. The hospital runs residency program in Obstetrics & Gynecology, Surgery, and Internal medicine, pediatrics and Child health, Pathology, Radiology, Oncology and others. It also hosts fellowship program in each department of the school of medicine including Gynecology Oncology, Colo rectal surgery, Body imaging, Infectious Disease and others.

Fellows

Dr. Tesfaye Abebe is an Obstetrician and Gynecologist and an Assistant Professor at Tikur Anbessa Specialized Hospital (Black Lion Hospital). He joined Addis Ababa University School of Medicine in October 2010 and graduated with great distinction in November 2016.
In December 2016, he joined the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Tikur Anbessa Specialized Hospital as a lecturer. After one year, he began his residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology, which he completed in March 2022. Currently, he is a second-year fellow in Gynecologic Oncology.
Dr. Abebe is also a fellow of the International Gynecologic Cancer Society (IGCS), a distinction he considers both an honor and a significant milestone in his professional growth. He has a particular interest in gynecologic oncology, with a research focus on gynecologic malignancies in HIV-positive patients, aiming to contribute to the development of tailored screening, prevention, and treatment strategies.

Dr. Binyam Esayas Abuye is an IGCS fellow in Gynecologic Oncology from June 2022 to 2025.
He is a dedicated member and IGCS fellow, aiming to improve outcomes of patients with gynecologic cancer in Ethiopia. With a strong commitment to advancing healthcare in more underserved communities.
Dr. Binyam E. contributes to inspire and collaborate within the field, striving to improve the lives of patients through research and clinical practice.
Dr. Merga Negeri Disasa is an IGCS Fellow at Addis Ababa University, Ethiopia, from 2023 to 2025. He graduated from Addis Ababa University in 2020 and has worked for two years in the field of obstetrics and gynecology. "My motivation to join the gynecologic oncology subspecialty is deeply intertwined with my passion and commitment to serving women in Ethiopia and my belief that a cervical cancer-free generation is not just a dream but an achievable reality. Together, with determination and collaboration, I believe we can turn this vision into a future where all women have the opportunity to live healthy, fulfilling lives free from the burden of cervical cancer."

Dr. Motuma Gutu Fayera is an IGCS fellow at Addis Ababa University, Ethiopia from 2023 to 2025. He completed both his basic medical training and his residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Addis Ababa University, College of Health Sciences.
He was Head of the department, Attending Physician and practiced general Ob/gyn at Ambo University Referral Hospital for two years until he decided to join the Gyn Oncology fellowship.
"In a country where oncology care is at its infancy, joining the team to tackle women reproductive organ cancers is a privilege. When I am treating these women, I know I am not only curing cancer and alleviating suffering but also treating the family, the society and the economy as a whole. So it is my blissful duty to propagate a wave of skilled Gynecology Oncology surgery care by joining IGCS."

Dr. Silanite Tamiru is an Obstetrician and Gynecologist who graduated from Addis Ababa University, College of Health Sciences, School of Medicine with a medical degree in 2017. He earned his specialty certificate in Obstetrics and Gynecology from the same institution in 2022.
Before joining the IGCS fellowship program in October 2023, Dr. Tamiru worked as an obstetrician and lecturer at Debre Birhan University Teaching Hospital.
