Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital (ABUTH)
Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital (ABUTH), Zaria is located at Giwa Local Government area of Kaduna state, northwestern Nigeria. The hospital was designated as one of the Oncology Centres of Excellence in Nigeria in 2015, alongside five others. It is a centre that provides prevention, screening, diagnosis, treatment and palliative care for cancers, in addition to training and research.
Our institution therefore serves as a cancer referral centre from other parts of northwestern Nigeria and even beyond. There is a five-year old Gynaecologic Cancer Multidisciplinary Team Tumour Board established in May 2019 consisting of Gynaecologists, Radiologists, Radio-oncologists, General Surgeons, Urologists, Pathologists and Palliative Care nurses. This has gone a long way to improve Gynaecologic cancer care in ABUTH. As with other centres in Nigeria, funding for cancer care is mainly out of pocket and with less than 10% of the Nigeria population having access to the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) funding which is currently compulsory for all citizens and residents. In addition, ABUTH is also one of the centres benefitting from the recently introduced Chemotherapy Access Partnership (CAP) and also the three year old National Cancer Health Fund (NCHF) which currently covers cervical cancer treatment for indigent patients in addition to breast and prostate cancers. The National Emergency Medical Service and Ambulance System (NEMSAS) is also domiciled at ABUTH and six other centres across the country.
Local Supervisors

Prof. Adekunle Olanrewaju Oguntayo (MBBS, FWACS, FICS, PGDPA, MIAD)
Prof. Oguntayo is a dedicated Gynecologist, academician, and researcher with a strong passion for gynecologic oncology. With over two decades of experience in clinical practice, training, and research, he has been committed to improving the care of women affected by gynecologic cancers in Nigeria despite the challenges of a developing healthcare system.
Prof. Oguntayo has played a key role in advancing gynecologic oncology in Nigeria, particularly through the introduction of the IGCS fellowship program at Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital, Zaria, and other institutions. This program has significantly enhanced knowledge, skills, and practice in the field, bridging critical gaps in patient care. Its impact extends beyond gynecologic oncology, benefiting related disciplines such as radiology, radio-oncology, and pathology.
He believes the IGCS fellowship program continues to add immense value to both individual practitioners and the broader field of gynecologic oncology in Nigeria.
