The gentle March breeze rustled through the leaves, casting an ethereal glow on our garden as my husband and I basked in the warmth of the golden hour, savouring this tranquil moment. Then, a jarring ring shattered the peace. It was the hospital. My heart hammered in my chest as the nurse spoke. "Please come in tomorrow with your husband. The doctor will explain."
Fear, cold and sharp, gripped me. My husband, sensing my worry, held me close, concern etched on his face. Life can change in an instant. One moment, you're enjoying a beautiful evening with loved ones. Next, you're facing a storm you never saw coming.
Sitting in the clinic, the doctor's words echoed – Stage 1A uterine cancer. The words hit us like a punch to the gut. My worst fears were confirmed. But I wasn't alone. My husband, my rock, was there every step of the way.
Amidst the fear, there was a glimmer of hope. The surgery was scheduled, two weeks of unbearable anxiety clouding our days. I chose not to tell my children overseas, not wanting to worry them until it was over, carrying this burden alone with my husband's unwavering strength beside me.
Five years. Five years of checkups, hormone replacement therapy, and the constant shadow of fear. But I wouldn't let it define me. With my husband (who still struggles to say the word) by my side, and the unwavering encouragement and support of Dr. J. Ng, I celebrated my five-year remission in March this year – a victory soaked in gratitude. Thank you, Dr. Ng. You gave me back my life!
Message of hope to others:
Early detection saves lives. Uterine cancer may have tried to steal my future, but it couldn't steal my spirit. You are not alone. If you're facing a similar journey, know this: there is hope.
