University of Rwanda
Rwanda, a remarkable African nation, has made significant strides in healthcare, particularly in the field of gynecologic oncology. The University of Rwanda's College of Medicine and Health Sciences, in collaboration with local and international partners, including the International Gynecologic Cancer Society (IGCS), has established a two-year Gynecology Oncology Fellowship program that started in 2022. This program aims to address the critical need for specialized gynecologic oncologists in Rwanda and the region.
Fellows in this program receive comprehensive training in all aspects of gynecologic oncology, including diagnosis, surgery, medical and radiation oncology, and supportive care. They gain valuable clinical experience at renowned teaching hospitals in Rwanda, including King Faisal Hospital Rwanda, University Teaching Hospital of Kigali and Rwanda Military Referral and Teaching Hospital. They work alongside experienced gynecologic oncologists. Mentorship from both local and international IGCS experts provides guidance and support throughout their training.

Dr. Diomede Ntasumbumuyange

Dr. Dawit Worku is a Local IGCS mentor, Based at Kigali University Teaching Hospital (CHUK).

Dr. Tadios Asres Mekonnen is a Local IGCS mentor Based at Rwanda Military referral and teaching Hospital (RMRTH). He is currently the coordinator of Gynaecology oncology fellowship at University of Rwanda.
Fellows

Dr. Blaise Dushimiyimana is a Gynaecology Oncology fellow since 2023. currently pursuing his fellowship at Kigali University Teaching Hospital (CHUK). He obtained a master’s degree as Obstetrician gynaecologist in 2019, from the University of Rwanda College of medicine and Health sciences.

Dr. Odile Murekatete is a first Rwandan Female Gynaecology Oncology fellow 2023. currently pursuing her fellowship at Rwanda military referral and Teaching Hospital (RMRTH). She obtained a master’s degree as Obstetrician gynaecologist in 2020, from the University of Rwanda College of medicine and Health sciences.
International Mentors

Dr. Lisa Bazzett-Matabele is an IGCS international mentor based at University of Botswana. She comes in Rwanda once a year and works with fellows in outpatient clinics, ward rounds, gynecology oncology surgeries and journal clubs. She has a particular quality of having served as a gynecologic oncologist at Kigali University teaching Hospital in 2015-2019.

Dr. Katina Robison is an IGCS international mentor based at Tufts Medical Center. She comes in Rwanda once a year and works with fellows in outpatient clinics, ward rounds, gynecology oncology surgeries and journal clubs. She also supervises fellows during their international rotation at Tufts medical center (USA).

Dr. Thomas C. Randall is an IGCS international mentor based at Columbia University. He comes in Rwanda twice a year and works with fellows in outpatient clinics, ward rounds, gynecology oncology surgeries and journal clubs. He also Supervises and arranges international rotations for fellows.
