NIGERIA
Nigeria is located in the tropical western part of Africa and is a middle-income country with an estimated population of 230 million, the world’s most populous black nation. It gained independence from the United Kingdom on 1st October, 1960. Nigeria has three levels of healthcare delivery: primary, secondary and tertiary. Its healthcare financing system is mainly the inefficient out of pocket type. Although the national, state and private health insurance schemes are available, they are subscribed to by about 10% of the population.

The disease spectrum is mainly infectious although increasing numbers of non-communicable diseases are being detected including cancers. The female genital tract cancers in decreasing order of occurrence are of the cervix, ovary, gestational trophoblastic tumours, endometrium, vulva, vagina, fallopian tube and primary peritoneum.

UCH 
It is the first teaching hospital in the country, affiliated to the first University, both in Southwestern Nigeria. It was established in November, 1957 and has 65 clinical and services departments and 1000 beds.  

The obstetrics and gynaecology department was one of the foundation ones and has 5 units created on 1st September 2010. The Gynaecological Oncology Unit has recently been accredited by the West African College of Surgeons as a subspecialty training center in the subregion. It has a multidisciplinary tumour board inclusive of 13 other departments with which meetings are held as needed. It is involved in cutting edge research including metagenomic studies, training and services including several health promotion and disease prevention programmes.

Prof. Imran Oludare Morhason-Bello

Prof. Imran Oludare Morhason-Bello is a Professor and Honorary Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist at the Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology, College of Medicine, University of Ibadan and University College Hospital, Ibadan. He is a fellow of both National Postgraduate Medical College (FMCOG), West African College of Surgeons (FWACS) and International College of Surgeons (FICS). He has two master’s degrees – MSc Reproductive Biology University of Ibadan and MPH in Epidemiology, University of Liverpool. He also has doctoral degrees from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, London, UK [PhD (London) in Clinical Research Epidemiology, and National Postgraduate Medical College (Doctor of Medicine)].

Prof. Morhason-Bello has Clinical and Research interest in Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery, and Gynaecological Oncology. He has published over 250 articles in peer review journals, monographs, and textbooks. Currently leading many research funded by NIH, NCI/NIH, AACR and European Commission on HPV associated cancers and women health where two IGCS Fellows are mentored. He is a member of the UCH Ibadan IGCS mentor team.

Prof. Akin-Tunde Ademola Odukogbe

Prof. Akin-Tunde Ademola Odukogbe (MB BS, MCommH, FWACS, FMCOG, FRCOG) is a Professor and Honorary Consultant in Gynecologic Oncology. He serves as the Coordinator and Local Mentor of the IGCS–Ibadan Fellowship Program.

With a medical career spanning over four decades, Prof. Odukogbe has worked as a medical doctor since 1983, an obstetrician-gynecologist since 1996, and a gynecologic oncologist since 2005. His experience includes clinical practice, teaching, and research across Africa, Europe, and Asia. He is the first African recipient of the Helene Harris Memorial Trust award and has published 89 journal articles.

Dr. Timothy Sesan Oluwasola

Prof. Akinyinka O. Omigbodun, MBBS, MD, FWACS, FMCOG, FRCOG

Professor of Obstetrics & Gynaecology, College of Medicine, University of Ibadan & Consultant Gynaecological Oncologist, University College Hospital, Ibadan, Nigeria

Akinyinka O. Omigbodun is a clinician and scientist specializing in gynecological oncology. Certified as a doctor in 1980, an obstetrician-gynecologist in 1987, and a gynecological oncologist in 1991, he has trained and mentored numerous residents, including IGCS fellows. His research focuses on cervical cancer prevention, trophoblastic invasion mechanisms, and surgical safety, with over 200 scholarly publications. A Past President of the West African College of Surgeons, he is a Fellow of both the Nigerian Academy of Science and the Nigerian Academy of Medicine.

Dr. Oluwasegun Caleb Idowu

Dr. Oluwasegun Caleb Idowu (MB, ChB, MWACS) is a Specialist Registrar in Gynecologic Oncology and an Associate Lecturer at the University College Hospital and the University of Ibadan. 

A dedicated obstetrician and gynecologist, Dr. Idowu is currently undergoing sub-specialty training in gynecologic oncology. He is also an early-career researcher with a focus on gynecologic oncology, obstetrics, and sexual medicine.
